You Bet Your Life!
Following a successful stint on the radio, comedian Groucho Marx made the
jump to television in 1950 on NBC with his now classic game show "You Bet Your Life!".
During a time where game shows were extremely popular and it was commonplace for
contestants to win thousands of dollars in them, "You Bet Your Life!" was an oddity.
Contestants seldom won much money, usually about one thousand to split between a
pair. What made the show such a success and had audiences tune in every Thursday night
for eleven years was the charm and sharp wit of host Groucho who made it a practice
to grill contestants and openly flirt with women. "You Bet Your Life!" came to an end
in 1961 after a scandal on another game show and the following public fallout.

Trivia:
"You Bet Your Life!" almost got canned before it even had a chance to air on television.
When the show was green-lighted everyone assumed, including the show's sponsor DeSoto
Automobiles, that Groucho would do the show in his traditional conductor's tailcoat and
painted mustache. Groucho refused and it was discovered that his contract
made no provisions for him to appear in costume.
