During the late 1930s Paramount Studios obtained the rights to make animated Superman episodes to be shown before full length motion pictures as was the custom of the time. Paramount approached Max and Dave Fleischer of the famous Fleischer Studios (Popeye and Betty Boop) to create the animated shorts. The original episode was made for a staggering for the time $50,000. Subsequent episodes cost $30,000 to make. Fleischer Studios made a total of 17 episodes.
