A Star is Born (1937)
Starry eyed Esther Blodgett (Janet Gaynor) is just another girl from the mid-west filled with
Hollywood dreams. While waitressing at a posh Hollywood party, she is spotted by the alcoholic
actor Norman Maine (Fredric March) who happens to be one of her idols. He gives her an audition and
before she knows what going on she is caught in Hollywood's glamour machine. Esther and
Norman eventually wed but while her career is flourishing, his is grinding down to a stop.
"A Star is Born" is a ruthless satire on the early days of the movie industry, the exhilarating success
of rising fame as well as the part seldom seen, the crushing effect of fading away into obscurity.
It was remade in 1954 starring Judy Garland but the original remains a jewel of 1930s classic
films.
