At the time "SOS Coast Guard" was filmed as a 12 episode serial for Republic, Bela Lugosi
and Boris Karloff enjoyed a popularity brought about by their classic monster roles of 1931,
Lugosi for "Dracula" in 1931 and Boris for "Frankentein". The fact that Lugosi's character
is named Boroff and the ship they are on is the "Carfax" (Dracula stayed at Cairfax Abbey in London)
are in-jokes alluding to those classic monster films.
