My Man Godfrey (1936)
The performances by Carole Lombard, William Powell, Mischa Auer, and Alice Brady earned the enseble
Academy Award nominations in this classic comedy by director Gregory La Cava, whom himself by given
a nod by the Academy for Best Director. The film is an effetive satire on the economic situation of
the times, the 1930's Depression. Powell plays Godfrey, a forgotten man found in the city dumps by
rich socielite Irene (Lombard) during an excavanger hunt and made the family butler. Godfrey brings
sanity and romance to Irene's nutty family while providing biting comentary of the social elite of
the time.

Trivia:
First film to receive four Academy Award Nominations for acting. Also the fist to receive writing and directing nominations without
a Best Picture nomination. The film didn't win a single award.
