Office Bucks
The best keeps getting better in 2002; it was another record-shattering year. The MPAA reported that the domestic box-office totaled $9.5 billion dollars and admissions at 1.64 billion, the highest it’s ever been since 1957.
In 2002 it marked the 11th consecutive year of box office growth. In a first for 2002 three distributors grossed over a billion dollars each: Sony, Buena Vista, and Warner Brothers.
‘Spiderman’ shattered records for opening weekends with an astounding $114.8 in three days. After a two-year absence the summer season movies took the top spots for highest grossing films; in 2000 and 2001 late-year holiday release filled the top slots.
The surprise of the year came with IFC Film’s 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding', which made $214.4 million, making it the highest grossing independent movie of all time. A trend in 2002 was sequels; five of this years ten highest grossing films were sequels.
For the third consecutive year comedy was the top grossing genre with $2.5 billion from 106 films.
Followed by action-adventure with $1.4 billion and science fiction $1 billion. |
